About Me

About me

Born and raised New Yorker with nothing more than art supplies, a laptop and a dream. I am proud to create engaging resources for thousands of social studies teachers.

I love history so much that I received my bachelor’s in History( my dad was not happy) and continued my education to receive a master’s in education social sciences 6-12. I am also certified to teach gifted students.

Through mssocialstudiesteacher.com, teacher workshops, and social studies resources, I help teachers bring engagement into their classroom.

“I am asked often, How do I create my lessons?”

Since elementary school, I always had an inclination towards social studies. I don’t know why, I could easily make the connections in social studies. By the time I went to middle school I was a mini historian. In high school, I may have sucked at sports, but I could list the presidents! My enjoyment of social studies had me thinking early on how it should be taught.

I was also passionate about other seemingly unconnected things: drawing, painting, playing the sims, watching harry potter movies, creativity, spirituality, fitness, and listening to music to name a few.

After several failed attempts to figure out what I wanted in life, I thought I would try teaching. Why not? I always loved social studies, I mean I majored in history in college. I realized that my very unusual combination of interest and skills did not make me weird, but a great person and teacher.

When I began teaching I became nervous and thought students would judge my crazy lesson ideas. I used the textbooks instead as if it was my life support. I was a mean teacher who ” didn’t smile to December” in order to hide my insecurities. I realized that all of my interest, skills and passion were not being used by… ME! I made a mindset changed and became connected with the my inner teacher. I threw out the text book and began creating my own resources.

Once I began creating my own resources, it was as if the gates of heaven opened and I realized my purpose in my life.

I want to make engaging resources for teachers to use around the world!

All of the things I thought were weird or made me an introvert was actually meant to help others. I want to share this passion with you, and that is why every resource is made with love.

I knew I had to share this enlightenment, so I got a team together ( ok, its not a team, I really just ask my dog Harley for advice) and created mssocialstudiesteacher.com

I now spend 30+ hours a week after school and on weekends to create engaging resources for classrooms.

What does this mean for you?

Through all of my trials and tribulations, I have learned what it means to be a successful social studies teacher and have mentored other teachers.

Please don’t assume that just because I have things figured out now,  I don’t make mistakes or have awful days( like when I break a nail). My insecurities still flare-up, and at times I want to run and hide under the covers to watch Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

But my commitment is to bring you the best resources and to keep it as honest as we go on this journey. So please don’t expect some bougie teacher who will teach the “correct” methods of giving DBQ’s. But do expect creative ideas towards social studies, wisdom, my sarcasm, and unwavering devotion to help you create the best lesson, save you time, and make teaching fun again.

If you have read this far, thank you. I hope this is just the beginning of our relationship. You can join the email list to hear from me every Wednesday.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit. I am happy we are connected like Roosevelt and Chamberlain.

Sending you some good juju,

Alaina
